Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is characterized by unwanted, intrusive thoughts coupled with compulsive behaviors designed to reduce or avoid the discomfort that comes from the experience of the obsession. These behaviors may be physical such as washing or checking, or mental, such as reviewing or neutralizing.
The crucial distinction in OCD is the presence of an obsession or a compulsion, However, having one or both of these is not enough to get a diagnosis. For the condition to be considered a disorder and worth clinical attention you have to experience impaired functioning, reduced quality of life, or an inability to live a quality, effective life because you spend so much time attending to your obsessions and compulsions.
